Drone Soccer 2025

Drone Labs Takes to the Sky with Drone Soccer in Johannesburg

Drone Labs has once again been at the forefront of innovation in South Africa’s emerging technology and education landscape — this time through its involvement with Drone Soccer, an exciting new sport and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) initiative gaining momentum across the country.

Drone soccer — a fast-paced, technology-driven game where players pilot drones through vertical goal rings inside protective cages — has its origins in South Korea and is now recognised globally as an emerging air sport. It uniquely blends athletic competition with high-tech skills such as piloting, coding, and teamwork, providing participants with hands-on experience in future-focused disciplines.

Earlier in 2025, South Africa celebrated the launch of the SA Drone Soccer Tournament, an event designed to introduce young learners to drone technology through competition and practical application. Held at The Innovation Hub in Pretoria, the tournament brought together students from various TVET colleges across Gauteng to compete, learn and collaborate in a dynamic, immersive environment.

Drone Labs, alongside partners such as QP Drone Tech and South Africa Flying Labs, played a pivotal role in supporting this launch — helping to create opportunities for youth to experience drone piloting, problem solving, and tactical gameplay first-hand.

“The introduction of drone soccer in South Africa isn’t just about competition,” said one of the organisers. “It’s a powerful pathway into future-ready skills and careers in drone engineering, programming and STEAM fields.”

Drone Labs’ involvement in these early stages underscores its commitment to innovation, community engagement, and youth empowerment — aligning directly with its broader mission to make advanced drone technology accessible, exciting and impactful. Whether through competitive sport, educational programmes or collaborative partnerships, Drone Labs is helping set the stage for a more connected, tech-literate future in South Africa.
